Google Just Changed How You Verify Your Business, Here's What You Need to Know

Quick heads up if you manage a Google Business Profile: there's a change you'll want to know about before it turns into a fire drill. As Wilson Alvarez reported, Google started requiring most small businesses to verify their profile, as of July 3, 2026, with a quick video walkthrough of their location instead of the old postcard-in-the-mail method.

What You Actually Have to Do

Grab your phone and film a short, unedited walkthrough that shows your signage and proves your business is really there. That's it, no fancy equipment, no production value needed. Google just wants real, honest proof that you are where you say you are.

Why You Shouldn't Put This Off

I know, it sounds like a "get to it eventually" task. Don't. If your profile isn't verified properly, it can get suspended, and a suspended profile disappears from local search and Google Maps completely. That means when someone nearby searches for exactly what you offer, right now, you're just not there. Gone, right when it mattered most.

This one stings especially for local shops and service businesses that rely on "near me" searches for walk-ins and calls. Your Google Business Profile is often the very first impression someone gets of you before they ever pick up the phone.

A Few Other Changes to Know About

This isn't happening alone. Google's been busy this year. As Explore Digital's roundup of 2026 changes points out, Chat is going away: new conversations stopped, and it fully shuts off July 31, but you can now add a WhatsApp contact instead so you don't lose that direct line to customers.

And Digital Applied reported that as of July 8, appeals got easier too. You can now attach evidence right inside the appeal form instead of racing a separate upload window if your profile ever gets flagged.

Put it together and it's pretty clear: Google is tightening up how it verifies who's real. Profiles that aren't kept up are more likely to get flagged than they used to be.

What to Do This Week

Log in and check your verification status. Don't assume you're fine just because you haven't been prompted yet. Film that walkthrough video so it's ready to go: clear shots of your signage, your space, anything that ties the location to your name.

If you use Chat, set up WhatsApp now so you're not scrambling when it disappears at the end of the month. And if your profile's ever been flagged before, get familiar with the new appeal process so you're not stressed out searching for evidence under a deadline.

The Bottom Line

None of this takes long, but all of it is easy to put off until it costs you visibility you can't easily get back. A few minutes checking your profile today beats losing your spot in local search during your busiest stretch.
